March 4: A Double Feature on Women Workers
The Solidarity Committee’s film series will continue on Saturday, 4 March,
at 7:00 p.m., with the screening of “Heaven Will Protect the Working Girl” and
“The Life and Times of Rosie the Riveter”.
Produced in 1993 by the American
Social History Project, “Heaven Will Protect the Working Girl”
recounts the dramatic story of the “Uprising of the 20,000”, the 1909
strike by women garment workers in New York City. Based on reminicences,
pictures, and film footage of the immigrant women who participated in the
epic upheaval, this documentary provides an inspiring story of women’s
activism in the labour movement.
“Rosie the Riveter”, released in 1980, is
a powerful documentary examining women’s work during World War II, in
propaganda and in reality.
The Solidarity Committee is screening these
films in celebration of Women’s History Month.
These films will be shown at the Bricklayers’ Local 2 Hall (302 Centre
Drive, Westmere [Albany}, NY). Directions: Starting at the intersection of Western Avenue
(Route 20) and I-87 (the Northway), go west on Western Avenue for 9/10
of a mile. Pass the 20 Metro Diner and the Westmere Firehouse (both on
your right). IMMEDIATELY after the firehouse, turn right on Centre Drive
and go 1/10 of a mile to the Bricklayers’ Hall.
Admission is free. Refreshments will be served. Everyone is welcome to
attend.
